Best of luck to everyone taking part in Sunday’s London Marathon! Posted On 20 April 2018

The London Marathon gets ready for yet another course of charity and good will on Sunday, running annually as it has been now for 37 years

As well as it being a large, celebratory sporting festival, the London Marathon has raised over £450 million for charity since its first event in the spring of 1981, and holds the Guinness world record as the largest annual fund raising event in the world.

The Race Day weather forecast is currently predicted to be the hottest day of the year so far, hitting around 23 degrees Celsius – which would make it the hottest London Marathon ever. Participants who are planning on fancy dress may therefore want to reconsider!

Her Majesty the Queen, who turns 92 tomorrow, will start the 26.2 mile race from the grounds of Windsor Castle. Sir John Spurling, chairman of London Marathon Events, said: “We are honoured that Her Majesty the Queen has accepted the invitation.”

Arranged over a largely flat course around the River Thames, the race begins at three separate points around Blackheath and finishes in The Mall alongside St James’s Park. The London Marathon is sponsored through Virgin Money, and is part of the World Marathon Majors.
