Man City make history

Man City win the FA Cup to become the first club to win the domestic treble.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon at Wembley stadium setting the stage for a great underdog performance, but Man City dashed any hope Watford had of creating an upset in the 26th minute when David Silva scored the first of City’s six goals.

When Gabriel Jesus added a second in the 38th minute, the contest was over. Man City started Jesus over leading goal scorer Sergio Aguero and left Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne on the bench, which goes to show just how much talent this Man City team possess.

In the second half, Guardiola introduced De Bruyne, and Man City stepped up another gear, heaping more misery on a Watford team who didn’t play that bad, with four second-half goals.

Guardiola’s Man City are as extraordinary to watch as they are ruthless. Another team 3-0 up in the FA Cup final would play it safe but not Man City, they went for the jugular, cutting open Watford again and again.

To be fair to Watford, who themselves managed 11 shots, it was a game where it didn’t matter who was against them, Man City were just too good; a whirlwind of quick attacking football leaving opposite players bamboozled, chasing shadows.

The win rounded off a full house of domestic trophies this season, starting with the Community Shield back in August when two goals from Sergio Aguero beat Chelsea; through to the Carabao Cup in January when Man City again beat Chelsea; to the thrilling Premier League win earlier this month and finally the FA Cup win on Saturday.

It was an FA Cup final that will be summed up for future generations by a five-second clip of Vincent Kompany, the Man City captain, grimacing at Troy Deeney, the Watford captain, before saying, ‘harsh’.

Vincent Kompany announced his decision to leave Man City at the end of this season on Sunday morning, confirming he will move to Anderlecht, where he started his career, to become their player-manager next season.

The 6-0 win sees Man City equal the record for the biggest win in an FA Cup final on top of becoming the first ever team to win a domestic treble in men’s football.

There is just one cup missing from Guardiola’s Man City trophy case; the Champions League, and with UEFA investigating their spending they may have to deal with a ban from that competition next year on top of a transfer ban from FIFA.

However, with a team this good it’s easy to see Man City completing the treble again next year if they have no mid-week Champions league football to deal with.
